Dhokra lantern is a handcrafted metal object made primarily of brass using the ancient lost-wax (cire perdue) casting technique. Originating from tribal artisans of eastern and central India, especially Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal, it represents one of India’s oldest metalworking traditions, dating back over 4,000 years.

The design of a Dhokra lantern typically features:

  • Intricate lattice patterns or jali work that allow light to filter through, reminiscent of ancient Indian palace windows.

  • rustic, antique finish and elaborate geometric motifs that add an elegant look to interior décor.

  • Functional features enabling use as both a hanging lamp or tabletop lantern, with space to place a diya or candle inside.

  • Sometimes adorned with miniature animal motifs or symbolic tribal art details.

Dhokra lanterns symbolize positive energy, warmth, and spiritual illumination, making them ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, or festive occasions. They combine the utility of soft, diffused lighting with the artistry of tribal craftsmanship, serving as both décor and collectible heritage artefacts.
